The weather is gradually improving as our gardens continue to come to life in spring, with changes happening every week now.

There's so many fresh, new plants arriving on our garden centres, it's worth having a regular visit to make sure you don't miss out on all your favourites. April is a fantastic time of year to be planting new shrubs, perennials, alpines, roses and climbers as the soil begins to warm up, but not dry out. By planting now you'll reap the rewards with colourful displays during summer.

Plants to recommend this month include:

  • Pieris - Available in 6 varieties, lovely bell shaped flowers in spring, likes acidic soil.
  • Cytisus Porlock - Yellow flowers in the early part of spring that produce a lovely scent
  • Osmanthus Burkwoodii - Evergreen shrub with lovely white scented flowers April-May
  • Spiraea Arguta - Masses of white flowers in April, hardy shrub that likes sun or shade
  • Ribes - 3 to choose from, all produce masses of fragrant flowers.
  • Dicentra Spectabilis - Lovely heart shaped flowers right through till june. Likes sun.

General Gardening Tips

•Spray your roses with Multi-Rose 3 in 1. It kills bugs, controls disease and provides your roses with a foliar feed.

•Sow and plant your vegetables outdoors, see our vegetable planner for more details.

•Lawn Care. Re-seed any bare patches of lawn, making sure you cover with a net to protect from birds. See our lawn care range here. It's an ideal time to start mowing your lawn as well.

•It's not too late to plant your summer flowering bulbs, buy and plant now before our stocks run out.

•Improve your soil in borders by digging in some organic matter. We recommend you do this before planting to ensure your soil is packed with nutrients.
