For every month of the year, Thompsons Plant & Garden Centre will be offering you our expert advice on all things gardening.

We aim to use our everyday knowledge of gardening to help you on your way to creating, maintaining or improving your garden. We'll use tips from our expert nursery growers on all things planting, flowering and growing as well as general gardening tips from our garden centre staff.

May

The weather has improved greatly and the gardening season is well under way now. Our gardens have colour shooting up from all angles, especially now that the bedding plant season is under way.

It's a great time to be planting your summer baskets, bowls and pots with fresh new bedding plants that we've got on sale right now. Have a look at what we've got in our bedding plant range here.

Plants to recommend this month include:

  • Cistus Greyswood Pink
  • Lithodora Heavenly Blue
  • Kerria Japonica Pleniflora
  • Hebe Heartbreaker
  • All summer bedding plants

General Gardening Tips

•Clear away any dead leaves of daffodils. Deadhead azaleas, camelias, pansies, rhododendrons and tulips once they finished flowering.

•Plant your maincrop potatoes to harvest in September and October.

•If you've been feeding the birds all winter make sure you continue as birds become dependent on regular sources of food.

•Cut your lawns on a weekly basis now, feeding them if they look pale and sparse

•They may still be a chance of frosts so keep an eye on the forecast. Use fleece to protect tender bedding, fruit blossoms and tender vegetables.

What's New at Thompsons?

All of our Summer bedding plant range can now be purchased at all our garden centres. Choose from Geraniums, Lobelia, Marigolds, Begonias, Petunias and Surfinia Petunias. It's not just the popular bedding plants you'll find in our plant areas, we have a great range of many different varieties all grown locally at our very own nurseries.

Potted fruit and vegetables are proving extremely popular so far this year with stocks selling faster than we can replinish. Make sure you don't miss out by making an early visit when fresh stock has been put out for sale.
