Starting Your Own Plot

If you have the space in your garden, then the best place to grow your vegetables are in a dedicated plot. Select a site that is in full sun or partial shade and sheltered from strong winds.

The first thing you need to do is to improve the quality of the soil. Dig it over to at least a spades depth, removing any weeds, roots, stones and other debris as you go.

Dig a trench the length of your plot so that you can add a good quality organic compost or well-rotted manure to the soil. Fill the bottom of the trench with compost, fork over, and re-fill with soil. Dig a new trench parallel to the first and follow the same process. Continue this until you have worked over the whole plot.

Organic gardeners; make sure you fork in plenty of organic material to start with, topping up every other year. We recommend applying a general purpose fertiliser such as 'Growmore' before you sow or plant.

Your plot is now ready to start planting in.
