About the Camellia

Camellia are popular evergreen shrubs that flower in late winter and early spring. There are many varieties to choose from with single or double flower heads and shiny dark green leaves that provide year round interest.

Camellias are acid-loving plants, which means they need to grow in acidic soil, ideally with a pH of around 6 to 6.5. A simple soil test with a PH kit will tell you all you need to know. If your soil is more alkaline then don’t worry, as Camellia will grow quite happily in a container filled with ericaceous compost.

Top Tips

Camellias are an easy to grow evergreen shrub, but it is important to remember that they thrive in acid soil, so you will need to plant with an ericaceous compost. If you have a Rhododendron in your garden, then the Camellia will probably do well.

  • An ericaceous plant that requires an acid soil
  • Prune after flowering to keep it looking fresh
  • Water regularly whilst it establishes itself, particularly during summer. Rain water is best
  • Feed in spring with an ericaceous fertiliser
  • Camellias prefer a sheltered position, away from cold winds and early morning sun
