How to use bark in your garden?
Bark can be used in the garden in several ways, including:
- Mulch: Shredded or chipped bark can be spread around plants as a mulch to help conserve moisture, regulate soil temperature, and suppress weeds.
- Pathways: Large pieces of bark can be used as a natural and attractive material for garden paths and walkways.
- Soil amendment: Bark can be added to garden soil to improve its structure and drainage.
- Plant protection: Bark can be used to protect the base of trees and shrubs from damage from lawnmowers or weed trimmers.
Choosing the right mulch and bark
It's important to note that not all types of bark are suitable for use in the garden, and some may contain harmful chemicals or pests. Additionally, some tree barks, such as cedar and redwood, contain natural chemicals that may have an adverse effect on some plants. Before using bark in the garden, it's important to research the suitability of the specific type of bark for your particular use.
Spread a 2-3 inch layer of mulch over the soil around your plants. This will help to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. By choosing suitable soils, composts, and bark, you can support the health and vitality of your garden and enjoy a bountiful harvest of fresh produce and beautiful blooms.
