Native to the warm climates of Mexico, the poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima) has been associated with Christmas for centuries. Aztecs admired the plant for its vibrant red colour, which symbolized purity and represented the goddess of fertility. Fast forward to the 16th century, when a legend emerged about a young girl presenting humble weeds to a church nativity scene—these weeds miraculously transformed into bright red poinsettias. This story cemented the plant’s connection to Christmas.

The poinsettia’s journey to worldwide fame began when Joel Poinsett, a U.S. ambassador to Mexico and avid botanist, introduced it to the United States in 1825. Its popularity quickly spread, and today it is one of the best-selling potted plants globally, especially during the festive season.

For enthusiastic gardeners, caring for a poinsettia offers a delightful challenge. With the right environment, this seasonal favourite can thrive beyond the holidays and even bloom again next year.

• Lighting Needs: Poinsettias love bright, indirect light. A spot near a sunny window is perfect, but avoid harsh direct sunlight, which can damage the bracts. Rotate the plant occasionally to ensure even growth.
• Watering Tips: Poinsettias prefer slightly moist soil, so water only when the top inch feels dry. Be cautious not to overwater, as their roots are prone to rot. Always check that the pot has good drainage and never leave the plant sitting in a saucer of water.
• Ideal Temperatures: Keep your poinsettia in a room with stable temperatures between 15-22°C. Avoid drafts from windows or doors and keep it away from heat sources like radiators or fireplaces.

Poinsettias are part of the Euphorbia family, and their colourful bracts are actually modified leaves. The tiny, understated flowers are located at the centre of the bracts, called cyathia. This unique characteristic makes the poinsettia stand out among holiday plants. For those passionate about gardening, experimenting with different varieties—like the speckled ‘Jingle Bells’ or the creamy ‘Polar Bear’—can be a fun way to diversify your festive collection.

Enthusiastic gardeners can keep their poinsettias for years. After the holiday season, cut the plant back to about 15cm in spring, repot it in fresh soil, and place it outdoors in a shaded area during summer. To encourage blooming and bract colouring in autumn, provide 14 hours of complete darkness each night for about eight weeks starting in late September.
