Things you need to know about roses

  • Most rose varieties will thrive when planted in full sun, although some will tolerate partial shade, aim for at minimum of 4 to 6 hours sunlight a day.
  • When planting up your roses you need to plant in a rich soil, in a moist but well drained site. We recommend digging in a good quality multipurpose compost or manure to your soil prior to planting to help give it the best possible start.
  • Watering your roses correctly after planting is vital. The soil needs to stay moist but not waterlogged.
  • To get the best from your roses you need to feed them regularly with a good quality rose feed, this will encourage strong growth and better blooms throughout the flowering period.
  • Pruning your roses once a year will help to promote healthy new growth as well as controlling the shape. Prune in late winter or early spring around the time that new growth begins.

When to plant roses

Container grown, potted roses can be planted at any time of year providing the ground is not frozen or waterlogged. The ideal, optimum time for planting roses is in autumn, as the soil is still warm from the summer and moisture levels are wetter. They will but their roots down, then become dormant for the winter months before coming to life in early spring.

How to plant roses

Choose the right spot in your garden for your rose, making sure it has enough sunlight. Dig a hole that is wider and deeper than the pot your purchased, adding a good quality compost or manure to the soil. Carefully remove the rose from the pot, placing in the planting hole and immediately water thoroughly. Fill the hole in around the rose, carefully pressing down the soil around it. Water regularly after planting.
