Plant of the Month - January
Thompson's Plant of the Month for January is the Hellebore
Often referred to as the Christmas Rose, Hellebores are low a-growing plant that are easy to grow in any garden. They grow to a height and spread of between 30cm and 1 meter, and will flower from December through to early Spring.
Hellebores are tough, versatile plants that will tolerate a wide range of growing conditions, which makes them an excellent addition to any garden. They are quite vigorous growers and can quickly multiply to form larger clumps.
They have a wide range of flower colours, from shades of crimson or red to subtle pinks, as well as various shades of yellow and white, many with attractive speckles inside the flowers.
Hellebores are best suited to the front of your borders, and look great in a woodland setting or to provide colourful ground cover. Many varieties have a nodding flower which heads hang down making Hellebores ideal for planting on a bank. Hellebores are usually evergreen, although also semi evergreen/deciduous in cold winters.
