Plant of the Month March

Our Plant of the Month for March is Prunus Cherry Blossom.

Cherry Blossom or Flowering Cherry trees as they are often known as, are a true sign that Spring has sprung in your garden. Known for their pretty pink and white flowers that cover the branches, these magnificent blossoms offer stunning colour to your garden after the dark and gloomy days of Winter. Ornamental cherry trees are grown for their flowers, but you’ll also find some fantastic varieties that have amazing foliage colour, particularly in the Autumn months.

Where to Plant Cherry Blossom

Best planted in a sunny, but sheltered spot, Cherry Blossom can tolerate some shade as well as a wide range of soil types,  making sure it’s moist and well drained. Smaller, shrub varieties like Kojo-no-mai look great in your borders whilst the larger trees form great focal points to your garden and can be underplanted with Spring bulbs such as daffodils or tulips to enhance their beauty. Most varieties of Cherry Blossom are a perfect tree for a smaller garden as they come in range of shapes and sizes.

Perfect for Pots

Prunus Kojo-no-mai is a smaller shrub variety of cherry tree that is suitable for growing in containers. It’s a steady grower and compact in habit, so would suit a large pot positioned as a focal point in your garden. Not only will it flower in Spring with small, attractive white flowers bushing to a pink colour, but its foliage colour in Autumn gives it a multi-season interest in your garden.
